Get to Know Coach Russ

Like you, I am a parent and nothing is more important to me than my family. I have three girls and if someone is going to spend a great deal of time with my daughter; or directing the course of an organization that is important in my daughter’s life, I want to know more than a little bit about that person. So, who is this guy that is going to be “steering the ship” so-to-speak for your child’s swimming program from here on out?

When I was a teenager, two of the three most influential adults in my life were two of my high school teachers, one of whom was also my high school swim coach. I never participated in sports until I was a junior in high school. I tried out for the high school swim team and I’m pretty sure I was the worst swimmer on the team. I didn’t know how to do a flipturn on the first day but somehow I made it to State the following year. I actually made finals at State and our boys team took home the Second Place Team trophy.

The experience made such an impact on me that I decided that I would choose a career path based on how I, like my coach, could best make a positive impact in the lives of young people. I went to the University of Oregon and majored in Leisure Services and minored in Aquatic Sports Coaching. My first job out of college was Aquatics Director for a little YMCA that had 19 swimmers when I started. This was in a small town of 5000 people but over the next 4 years we managed to produce 3 State Champions, a Junior National Qualifier and a masters swimmer who broke 9 World Records.

Over the 30 years that I have coached swimming I have had the privilege of coaching many more champions including Junior National and Senior National qualifiers. Last year, I had two swimmers with National #1 rankings. Out of over 10,000 certified swim coaches in the United States I am 1 of less than 200 that hold an ASCA Level 4 age group certification.

Better at Teaching Kids Good Swimming than Patriot Swim School.

During my three decades of coaching I have started several successful learn-to-swim programs. I have experience with the YMCA, Red Cross and SwimAmerica programs. I have been an instructor for all three and I can tell you that SwimAmerica is the best program by far.

That is because it was designed for the American Swim Coaches Association by America’s top competitive swim coaches. Many of the parents with children in swimming lessons may have no intent for their child to become a competitive swimmer.

However, no matter your motivation; whether safety, recreation or competition, good swimming is good swimming. I look forward to serving you and your children.
